Foundations of Folk Medicine: 3 part series

Join forager and herbalist Caleb Arnold of Ever Wilder for a deep dive into Appalachian Folk Medicine in this 3 part series. Through different seasons, classes will feature plant identification in the field and hands-on use of herbs, medicine making and tasting. Participants will be able to confidently and effectively use plants from their backyards and the woods around them to ease common ailments and aid well being. Each class includes take home preparations. Learn how herbalists, granny women, root diggers, and just plain helpful folks have taken care of each other for centuries.

This series covers:

  • History of folk medicine (particularly Southern folk medicine)

  • Various herbal extractions

  • The differences between standard extractions and folk medicine

  • Best practices for drying, storing and preserving your herbal medicines

  • Identify useful plants in your own backyard

  • How to tend and cultivate medicinal plants in your yard or garden 

  • Herbal formulas for common ailments with specific dosage recommendations

  • Common herbal actions

  • Basics of phytochemistry and its application in folk medicine

  • Backcountry 1st aid basics

    INSTRUCTOR: Caleb has called the north Georgia mountains home his entire life. His draw to nature started at an early age, and he has spent the last decade learning from top instructors in the Southeast on various topics of herbalism, foraging, wilderness survival and more. He continues to educate himself in such topics through experiential learning at his farm with his partner and daughter. Together they started Ever Wilder with the aim of bringing awareness to the locally available food and medicine in the region.  He's given hundreds of educational tours and workshops to thousands of people who pass through Ever Wilder in Ellijay, GA.

    DATES: Saturdays May 3, June 28 and Sept 6, 11-2

Class Ticket Terms and Conditions

All sales for events, classes and workshops are final. Tickets are non-refundable but are transferable. If you cannot make it, send a friend instead!

Weather in Rabun County is variable. Classes will be held rain or shine. The Apothecary Barn is a cozy spot for gathering, in addition to ample garden space. In the event of serious inclement weather, we will reach out to reschedule. If you are unable to attend the new date, you have the option to receive a voucher for a future workshop or a refund.

If there is low-enrollment for a class, Stellar Roots Herbs may notify you of cancellation. In this case, you will have a credit voucher for future workshops or you will be able to receive a refund.

We have one scholarship spot for each class at a $20 rate to cover materials. If you are interested in attending on a scholarship, please fill in the website contact form with: 1. Why you would like to take the class and 2.Why you are eligible for a scholarship.
